Shopping Overview

Shopping in the Maltese islands has improved considerably during recent years with the building of various shopping centres and an increasing number of various shopping outlets.  Due to the size of the islands, one should not expect mega shopping centres however there is something for all budget and tastes.

Supermarkets are found everywhere.  Malta’s biggest supermarket, Pavi, is located in Qormi.  Opening and Closing hours vary from one supermarket to another.  In general supermarkets remain open longer on Fridays and Saturdays and are closed on Sundays.  A number of smaller outlets do open on Sunday.  Some outlets of Scotts Supermarket open on Sunday mornings as well.

The most popular areas for shopping are certainly Valletta and Sliema however one can find a good number of small shops also in other neighbourhoods.  Shoppers on a budget can find more inexpensive shops in the towns of Hamrun and Birkirkara which are less touristic and popular shopping neighbourhoods.

Tourist resorts such as Mellieha, Bugibba and Qawra offer good shopping options as well however more on souvenir and gift items targeting the tourist.

Shopping in Gozo have improved as well as now its capital city offers three small shopping centres; Tigrija Palazz, The Duke and Arkadia.  Gozo’s two biggest supermarkets can be found at The Duke and Arkadia shopping malls.  Arkadia Foodstore is open from Monday to Sunday (including public holidays) from 8AM to 8PM.  The Duke Foostore is open as well on Sunday but from 9AM to 1PM.
